Marie Haynes: ChatGPT Delivers Just 0.62% as Many Sessions as Google Organic Search
In the analysis, ChatGPT visitors convert more often, but across the 55 sites that track conversions, Google organic search drives 27 times as many conversions as all large language models combined.
What's happening
According to MarTech, Marie Haynes's analysis of 100 websites shows that ChatGPT sends just 0.62% as many sessions as Google organic search. Adding referrals from other large language models lifts that figure to 0.73% of Google organic traffic. Among the 55 sites tracking conversions, 13.8% of ChatGPT visitors convert, compared with 3.02% of Google organic visitors.
Behind the number
Marie Haynes's analysis of GA4 data from 100 websites. The study covers 12 months of data and more than 145 million sessions.
Whose desk it lands on
The executive responsible for digital marketing. How do the sessions and conversions your site gets from ChatGPT compare with those from Google organic, and does the budget you allocate to AI search match that ratio?
Our view
The CX Brief's interpretation, not a claim made by the source.
ChatGPT traffic's strength is its conversion rate, but that rate does not close the volume gap: most conversions still come from Google organic. What's more, across the sites Haynes examined, ChatGPT referral traffic stopped growing exponentially in August 2025.
