"Search" Is Dead, Long Live "Discovery": How Walmart and Google Are Redefining CX
The partnership between Walmart and Google looks like one of the first signals of a shopping experience customized with AI.

Today I want to share with you a press release I read over my morning coffee, one that made me say, “The rules of the game really have already changed.” As you know, for years we’ve been saying the same thing at conferences and training sessions: “frictionless experience.” Don’t wear customers out, cut the number of clicks, understand them…
But the January 11, 2026 announcement from Walmart and Google took this concept to an entirely different level. We’re no longer talking just about “fewer clicks” but about the possibility of “no clicks at all,” in other words Agentic Commerce.
Let’s take a close look at the details of Walmart’s revolutionary partnership with Google Gemini (it seems to pop up everywhere these days, doesn’t it?) and, more importantly, at what it means for those of us who design experiences.

What Does the Press Release Say?
Walmart and Google announced that they have integrated the shopping experience directly into Gemini, Google’s AI model. This is not a simple “talk to a chatbot” integration. We’re talking about a fully integrated system built on a new standard called the “Universal Commerce Protocol.”
Here’s the scenario: Say you’re chatting with Gemini about a spring camping trip and asking for advice. The AI doesn’t just tell you “buy this tent”; because it is linked to your Walmart account, it knows your past purchases, understands your tastes and, right there in the flow of the conversation, offers you the product that suits you best. The moment you like something, the purchase goes through without your leaving the app or getting lost among tabs, and the product arrives at your door from a local store in as little as 30 minutes.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai describes this as “making agentic commerce a reality.” John Furner, CEO of Walmart U.S., who will take over as Walmart’s CEO in February, summed up the situation very clearly: “The shift from traditional web or app search to agent-led commerce is the next great evolution in retail.”
Through a CX Consultant’s Eyes: Why We Should Be Excited
As a customer experience consultant, when I read this news I immediately jotted down these three headings in my notebook. This development will fundamentally change our strategies for 2026 and beyond:
1. “Search” Is Dead, Long Live “Discovery” For years, we set “Search/Research” as the first step in customer journey maps. But this move by Walmart and Google points to a world in which customers don’t “search” for a product; the product “comes to them” while they are solving a problem. Customers no longer search for “camping tent prices”; they ask, “How can I have a great time in nature this weekend?” and the experience starts right there. We, too, now need to design not interfaces but “intents.”
2. Hyper-Personalization Is No Longer a Luxury but the Standard The most critical detail that caught my eye in the news is that the system recommends “complementary products” by combining customers’ past online and in-store purchase data. In other words, Gemini knows about the sleeping bag I bought at the store last week and recommends a mat to go with it. That means data silos are coming down. In customer experience, saying “I know you” no longer means simply addressing customers by name; it means being able to fill the gaps in their lives before they even notice them.
3. Loyalty Is Being Redefined With this integration, Walmart is bringing the benefits of Walmart+ membership directly into the AI chat. This proves that loyalty programs are not just about collecting points; they are about buying “convenience” and “priority.” Customers stay loyal to the ecosystem that makes their lives easier. By embedding itself inside Google Gemini, Walmart is becoming part of the customer’s digital world.
What Should We Do?
This news shows us one thing: no matter how fast your website is or how sleek your app looks, if you’re not where your customers are (which now means inside AI assistants), you may become invisible.
Please write “Agentic Commerce” at the top of your agenda. Customer experience is no longer designed on screens but in the depths of algorithms and conversations.
